We are offering a COLOR COPY of an antique 1911 map of part of Washington Park neighborhood of Chicago, bounded by: 47th Street + Cottage Grove Avenue + 62nd Street + Indiana Avenue, including The Washington Park. This map is so old that it features The Washington Driving Park, a.k.a. Washington Park Race Track at 61st and Cottage Grove and a “Horse Car Line” on 61st Street, the way it was back in 1911!
It is a beautiful plat map, prepared more than 110 years ago. I believe, this was a page of an old Atlas. History of Chicago at your fingertips!
According to my research: In 1883, 500 leading Chicagoans established the prestigious Washington Park Jockey Club. Its $150,000 Washington Park Race Track at 61st and Cottage Grove opened the next year and became the Midwest's preeminent track. Opening Day and the running of the American Derby became major dates in the elite social calendar. The 1893 Derby, worth $50,000 to winner Boundless, was the second-richest race in nineteenth-century America.
The size is rather large, appr. 18" x 35". For accurate dating of this map we referred to our extensive archive.
