We are offering a COLOR COPY of an antique 1903 advertisement map of East Chicago Co.s Factory Sites & Acres in NW Indiana.
According to my research, the Lake Michigan Land Company was the 1st developer of this area of the Northwest Indiana – they came up with an idea in 1901 to build harbor & ship canal in East Chicago. Also, in 1901, they offered huge parcel of land to Inland Steel Company to build a steel mill in this area.
This map does show the ship canal [waterways] from the Lake Michigan to the Grand Calumet River [which was planned to be completed in 1902], that’s why I believe that this map was created in 1903.
FYI: The canal and harbor were built over several years beginning in 1901
It shows huge territory, the land between: Lake Michigan & Cline Ave. & Grand Calumet River + Carroll Street & Illinois -Indiana State Line [parts of Hammond, East Chicago & Indiana Harbor]. Also, it shows ALL commercial sites & owners’ names in the area, at the time. There are very few still vacant parcels of land shown on this map.
This map does not have any surveyors’ notes or indexing – perhaps it was created as a display.
This map was kept folded in a very old file cabinet and is in very good condition. The Surveyor is the founder of our family business, Samuel S. Greeley.
